From his difficult childhood across Eastern Europe to his exploits as a pilot in the French Air Force during World War II, from his literary accomplishments as Romain Gary or Emile Ajar to his diplomatic career, there was more than one life in Roman Kacew’s existence. In Promise at Dawn , adapted from his eponymous fictionalised-memoir, it appears that the drive to become one of the major novelists of the 20th century came from his ever-demanding mother Nina, whose boundless maternal love would also be his burden to bear for life.
